Bozeman, Montana has gotten some bad press over the last week due to the city government’s unusual demand that all city job applicants hand over their logins and passwords to popular social networking sites. The city has now decided to stop the practice after widespread criticism.

While I am certainly glad to see them revise their H/R policies, this story underscores what seems to be a growing issue of local and federal agencies abusing their power without regard to the intent of the IV, V, IX, and XIV Amendments, especially in areas where these agencies do not (or attempt to) understand the internet and technology.
